Delightfully Different

Recently my mom and I laughed over trendy psychological diagnoses. As she said, “We used to be bipolar, then we were ADHD, but now we’re all Aspergers!”

I hold a degree in Psychology, so I recognize the usefulness of diagnoses as well as the need for therapies to help people cope with life and function in society.

However, it is high time we celebrated our differences. Different is beautiful. Different is exciting. Without differences, we’d be a boring slab of vanilla ice cream. Ok, I’ll admit, vanilla is yummy, but isn’t it better with strawberries or fudge or maybe even French fries? (Or if you’re really out there, like my little Jessie—kidney beans!)

What traits make you delightfully different?

  2. Don't worry I started on time and I am only on three for the challenge. I love your blog. I have alway been (felt) different. I march to a different drummer. I am for the most part joyful. I guess I was just born that way. I love life. I also work in special ed. (secretary) at the middle school. We have autism/aspergers class. These kids are my favorites. Icecream looks great! My grandsons would love it.

    1. I feel like a bit of a free spirit myself. Get a few of us together and we become a force of nature, right? Thanks so much for the follow, and I hope you'll enjoy my blog :)

  3. I have been thinking about this so much lately. I think it is great that we all have our differences. I like to think of them as gifts/talents. Why is it that this can be hard for others to accept those gifts and talents? Is it jealousy, fear, or or even hatred? Or is it that we think we have to compete and compare? It is sad that sometimes we can feel that others are judging us because of our gifts and talents? I know we are all guilty of feeling these feelings at times. I know I am, and then have to catch myself and try and work through those feelings. Yes- I always wanted to sing but guess what? I have realized that my gift is to support those that do. This can be my talent. It is like the ice cream. If you never tasted it then how would you know if it was good? If I never listened or went to support my friends and family that have a natural gift with music then I would miss out on the goodness of it. I hope this make sense. As you can tell I have had lots of thoughts on this because I see many around me ( even in our families) who tend to feel it is a competition among our children and it has really brought me to my knees in figuring out how I can love even when it hurts. Love that I found your blog. Keep up the great work! This is your gift/talent and I get to read and enjoy it!!! Love ya

  4. It is so true that people often become competitive when they should be supportive of each other. That's a principle we work very hard to teach in our family. The more we build each other up, the stronger and better ALL will be. It's so great to hear from you. Love you guys!
